In the first nine months of 2026, employers announced 120,136 US job cuts citing artificial intelligence as the reason — already 2.2 times the full-year 2025 figure of 54,836, and up from 4,247 in 2023, the category's first year. These are employer-attributed announced cuts (Challenger, Gray & Christmas), not measured net job losses.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas tracks announced US job cuts by employer-stated reason; "Artificial Intelligence" has been a category since May 2023. A separate "Technological Update" category (sometimes annotated "possibly AI" or "automation") is excluded. The 2024 figure is derived from Challenger's cumulative-since-2023 figure minus the verified 2023 and 2025 totals. Announced cuts are statements of intent, employer-attributed — this series cannot say how many jobs AI has actually displaced, and it is always labeled "citing AI".
